Period 1

Social Studies

Objective: Students will gain knowledge of mountains, and the physical stamina it takes to hike a mountain.
Materials needed: teacher laptop, student laptops, LCD projector.
Task:
Watch this video on Mt Kilamanjaro.
Mt Kilimanjaro

Class discussion questions:
The author of Three Cups of Tea, Greg Mortenson climbed this mountain when he was 11 years old. Do you believe you could climb this mountain at your age? What is the most physical demanding thing you have done in your life so far?

Student activity:
Locate Mt Kilimanjaro using Google Maps.
What surrounds the mountain? What can we assume about the culture of the people in that area?



Period 2

Language Arts

Objective: Students will gain knowledge about Three Cups of Tea's Author Greg Mortenson.
Materials needed: 1 copy of Three Cups of Tea, laptops, LCD projector.
Task:
The Book - Class discussion questions
Looking at the cover of the book, what do you think this book will be about?
The book takes place in what country? Can we make any predictions what kinds of things we will be reading about given that it takes place in that Pakistan?

Period 3 - Related Arts

Home Economics

Objective: Students will begin planning their bake sale to be held at the end of the week. Students will come up with a product and then create a
Materials needed: laptops, paper, markers, calculators, Photoshop.
Task: Students will be divided in to groups of two or three and will create a food product. The product must have the following components:
- an original name.
- be something students have already learned to make in Home Economics with at least 1 variation to make it "their own".
- a poster advertising the product for the sale.
- a label that shows ingredients and other information
By the end of class students should have their product chosen and have created posters for the sale.


Period 4

Math

Objective: Student will learn how to plot data in a graph.
Materials needed: LCD projector, laptops with spreadsheet software
Task: Students will learn to plot a given set of statistics.
Students will practice plotting statistics through activities in the textbook.


Period 5

Art

Objective: Students will see the collage style artwork in the story Listen to the Wind (young children version of Three Cups of Tea)
Materials needed: 1 copy of Listen to The Wind
Task: Teacher will read Lsiten to the Wind to the class. As the teacher is reading it, she will point out aspects of the collage type illustrations.
